 | Arkansas Stone Collection 6" X 2" X 1/2" Translucent, Black, White, Washita I use these with oil since I like the feedback I get with oil better than that I get from water. The Translucent is the most Fine with the black being more coarse and so on to the right. |
 | 19th century Translucent Yellow Watchmaker's Stone and box w/ attached parts cloth 5" X 2" X 1/2" I have not used this stone, I keep it simply because I like the looks of it and it's history. |
 | Combination Carborundum Stones made by The Carborundum Company of Niagra Falls between 1890 and 1920 Both are 6" X 2" X 1" These must be used with oil since the binder used to make them is a petroleum based product. |
 | Norton Combination Oil Stones Both are 6" X 2" X 1" The top stone is a combination Coarse and Fine India stone, it is an Aluminum Oxide based stone. The bottom stone is a Coarse and Fine Crystolon stone, it is a Silicon Carbide based stone. The Crystolon cuts more quickly than the India but leaves a rougher surface, when using these I start with the crystolon coarse then fine and then to the India coarse then fine, it provides for better results. I use oil on these since that is what Norton says to use with them. |
 | King 1200 Grit Synthetic Water Stone 8 X 2 1/2" X 1 1/4" This stone is a VERY fast cutter, but requires at least 10 minutes of soaking before it can be used, it soaks up lots of water and takes forever to dry out properly. I like this stone very much, but the soaking and 3 day dry-out after use are definitely a pain. |
 | Norton 4000/8000 Grit Synthetic Combination Water Stone 8" X 3" X 1" |
 | Chinese Natural Finishing Stone 8" X 2 3/4" X 1 7/8" Very Hard and smooth stone comes from the Guangxi province of China. Definitely one of the more beautiful stones I have, it has a pearlescent sheen to it in good light. |
 | Norton Brand Queer Creek Natural Water Stone 6" X 2" X 1" Fine Grit Sandstone Quarried from the Queer Creek Quarry near Logan, Ohio Kind of a plain stone, but a good performer. |
 | Rozsutec Natural Water Stone 6" X 2" X 3/4" Cut from a layer of sedimentary sandstone in the Slovakian Mala Fatra Mountains. Banded brown and green with dark red streaks, good looking and hard stone. |
 | Combination Dalmore Yellow and Dalmore Blue stone 6" X 2" X 1" One of my favorite natural stones, it was quarried in Scotland during the mid to late 1800s. I use it only with water and sometimes a slurry stone to help it cut faster. |
 | Tam O' Shanter Natural Water Stone 6" X 2" X 1" Quarried in Scotland during the mid to late 1800s. I use it only with water and sometimes a slurry stone to help it cut faster. |
 | Belgian Blue Water Stone 6" X 2" X 5/8" Quarried in Lierneux, Belgium |
 | Belgian Yellow Coticule Hone - 6" X 2" X 3/8" Bout - 3 1/2" X 3/4" X 3/8" Quarried in Lierneux, Belgium |
 | Welsh Dragons Tongue 8" X 2" X 1/2" This stone is quarried in Wales and provides a very fine sharpening surface, thought a bit slow cutting. I use this one only with water and occasionally with a slurry stone or powdered grit to speed things up. |
Amakusa Red 8 1/2" X 2 1/2"
X 2 3/4"
The Amakusa is quarried in Japan from Mt. Shoubudani and is a "Honyama"
Stone.
It's very porous and has many holes that do not seem to affect the
honing process. I like this hone not only for it's beauty, but
also for it's cutting speed. This stone seems a bit more coarse
than the King 1200 when worked with pressure and the accumulated slurry,
but when used with light pressure and rinsed regularly to remove slurry
I can get an edge that is finer than the King 1200.
A very nice and versatile stone for the upper-Coarse grit range. |
